Earth

I finally had my big chance to go see Earth this morning.  Why I didn't bring tissues is beyond me.  I sure coulda used 'em.  Normally I loathe anything Disney does, but this is a bit different.  If I didn't know it was 90% BBC's amazing Planet Earth series I wouldn't have gone.  But the chance to see that on the big screen was too tempting.

I have to say it was pretty darn cool.  It was all footage from BBC and was odd to watch without David Attenborough narrating.  I enjoyed seeing it all at once.  They took bits from each episode so you get a good feeling for the planet as a whole.  To watch the BBC version would take too long in one sitting.

Parts were also darn depressing.  It's heartbreaking to know that we are destroying this paradise.  I cried pretty hard during two parts, especially during the scene during and just after the walruses.  I was filled with anger at those who dismiss polar bears status as endangered animals.  The other part that breaks my heart is a scene with a wayward baby.

The good news is the theater was full.  They had two shows at 10:00 this morning and I hope the other was just as full.  I hope it was stuffed with wide eyed children who will remember what they saw and try to do better than their parents and grandparents.  The photo above is from the happy ending which shows the elephants finally reaching their water and enjoying every moment of it.  They're frolicking in the water and swimming and drinking to their heart's content.  Now that makes me smile.
