Speaking of the back-of-the-Scirocco days, I was watching my favorite Sunday morning news show and they did a piece on REM. Apparently the fellas are releasing a new album very soon. They're one of the bands, along with say... James, that provided the soundtrack to my early college days. One listen to their album Automatic for the People conjures up countless memories from working the Juniors Department at Steketee's. But it also got pretty heavy rotation when I lived in good ol' Dominican Hall at AQ. It was one of my very favorite cd's to sleep to. It was in the Cavalier when Matthew and I drove to Podunk, MI to pick up his friend from a bar.
One of the things I shall always associate with REM, though, is Annette. She was my suitemate and good friends with my friends. She loved REM. A lot. And they were playing at The Palace. I just happened to have one extra ticket. She had never seen them but now was her big chance. So four of us went to said REM show and enjoyed our great "Rear of Stage" seats. Sadly, she was killed a couple of years later, a month after she graduated. It always brings a bit of joy knowing I got to help her with that one thing because she was easily one of the best people I've ever known.
So yeah. New album. I still have a small REM collection but I haven't thought of them in ages, really. Now I have a hankerin' to have an REM-a-thon, but I really need to work on a lesson.
