What's happening to me?

I'm starting to sound old & Republican, neither of which is really me. But there have been things going on in H-Town and across the country lately that's just cheesing me off. Students from all the local high schools are protesting the immigration legislation. It's been going on for 3 days now. They march around with their signs saying things like "Get out, gringo!" Mexican flags and I've even heard of them stomping on the American flag. Mexican flags are being waved at schools around here with the US flag flying upside down under it. What gives? If they're so proud of Mexico, why are they here? I'm all for a protest, especially against evil conservatives, but this just seems to be a bunch of kids who want time off from school who are being egged on by the powers that be, groups that don't do anything about illegal immigrants who are held prisoner here by their transporters.

I guess beyond all that it's just very frustrating because what some people seem to forget is a key word in all this. It's illegal immigrants. It's not racist to be opposed to who knows who climbing fences and swiming through rivers to get here. I really admire the folks who do it the right way.

One thing I really dig about the legislation is that it requires people to learn English in order to become legal. I've had it up to *here* with trying to talk to people I deal with at work who I can't communicate with because they haven't learned the language. That's always been a pet peeve of mine.

That's about all the rant time I have on this subject. More is to follow, however.

I have to deal with yard people and general fix-it guys in my work and having to go through translators and expensive miscommunications are the height of annoying. If I ran my own business I'd put an end to using them altogether. But it's not my choice at the moment, though around the office we've all kind of decided to make it our choice and let people we can't communicate with go by the wayside.
