I didn't really get a chance to finish my thoughts on this book. Work will do that to you.
I heard they were "making it into a movie" so I was really excited. I absolutely love me a documentary. So when the discussion came up I decided to check the ol' IMDB to see how the movie's coming along. Much to my displeasure, they've turned it into a drama. And it's rated R. No matter how tempting, I don't do R movies anymore. But beyond that, I'm really disappointed that they didn't make a straight documentary about it. Did they feel they'd have to dumb it down for the American audience? Entirely possible. Aside from what Michael Moore's put out I can only think of two documentaries that had any real mass appeal: Hoop Dreams from years ago and March of the Penguins. And with the movies "Clerks II" and "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" opening today as just a random sample of the quality of Hollywood/American fare the public's taste leaves much to be desired. Maybe they were afraid people would think it's too much like "Supersize Me". I don't know. I just wish they'd had the balls to make a bonafide documentary version of the book. It really grinds my gears.
Speaking of documentaries, Blah & I went to this giant library on Monday to raid their video collection. What a treat it is. They have TONS of old vhs stuff that you can't get from Netflix. I picked out documentaries on the Great Depression, the 1904 Worlds Fair, the Holocaust in America, and this fascinating documentary about a teacher who did an experiment in her class about race and hate. Blah got a documentary about the start-up of radio and Stephen Hawking's Universe. They had so much more there that I wanted to bring home. Netflix is also fantastic for "renting" documentaries. If it weren't for them I don't know what I'd do. Mainstream movies that come to our local mall megaplex that I'd actually want to see are so few and far between.
That said, I'm not so high and mighty I don't enjoy a good dumb movie. I'm dying to see the new Wil Ferrell movie, "Telledega Nights". It would just be nice to have a bit more variety to choose from. Until then I'll use the heck out of Netflix and raid the library when I have a chance.
