Kurt Vonnegut

I never knew much about the man. I got the impression he was a bit on the wacky side, writing books that were a bit... off. But an interview with him showed up on my NOW podcast and I listened to it this (Wait! It's 2AM. This morning is right now. I mean yesterday morning!) morning on my walk. I pretty much fell in love with the man, no disrespect to the husband. I had to keep myself under control so as not to look insane as I power-walked nodding my head and pumping my fists in agreement. But I was doing it on the inside. I couldn't possibly agree more with pretty much every statement the man made. It's a shame I'm only now discovering his genius now that he's gone. But it has gotten me really wanting to read Slaughterhouse Five.

And yes, the man is a bit... off. He mentions wanting to sue B&W because their cigarettes haven't killed him yet. I highly encourage you to check out the transcript. I'd make a fancy link, but Blogger & my Mac don't jive quite right so I can't. But here it is. Enjoy!

I remember reading his short story "Harrison Bergeron" back in grade school, maybe 6th grade. I was intrigued with his work on the spot. It was so different and subversive compared to most of the stuff we're forced to read at that age in school. I mean Dickens is great and all, but Vonnegut was actually edgy, and that was pretty exciting to my 6th-grade self. But you're right, he is a little off, and most of his fiction is, too. I tried reading slaughterhouse five once many years ago and I admit I didn't get it at the time. Maybe I should give it another go.
